A wedding celebration in Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano State, turned tragic after a 34-year-old man, identified as Rabiu Mukthar, allegedly opened fire on guests, leaving one person dead and three others injured.
The incident reportedly occurred after Mukthar complained that the loud music from the wedding ceremony was disturbing his sleep.
According to the Kano State Police Command, officers were alerted to reports of gunfire at the wedding and responded to the scene.
Suspect Allegedly Fires Into Wedding Crowd
Police spokesperson CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa said the suspect allegedly came out of his nearby residence while the wedding celebration was ongoing and fired several shots into the gathering with a pump-action firearm.
The shooting reportedly caused panic among the wedding guests as people attempted to flee the scene.
During questioning, Mukthar allegedly told investigators that the loud music from the ceremony had prevented him from sleeping, leading to the violent confrontation.
Police said officers arrested Mukthar along with another suspect and recovered a pump-action gun believed to have been used during the incident.
The suspects have since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Kano for further investigation.
One Person Killed, Three Injured
The attack left one person dead and three others injured, turning what was supposed to be a celebration into a deadly tragedy.
The recovered firearm has been retained as evidence as investigators continue to establish the full circumstances surrounding the shooting.
The incident has also renewed concerns about the availability and use of firearms in residential communities and the dangers of allowing disputes over noise or social gatherings to escalate into violence.
Kano Police Review Security Situation
Following the incident, the Kano State Commissioner of Police convened a strategic meeting with senior police commanders at the command headquarters in Bompai.
The meeting focused on the state’s security situation, crime prevention and efforts to strengthen community engagement.
Police authorities have also urged residents to avoid taking the law into their own hands when dealing with disagreements over noise or other disturbances.
