Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has appealed to United States President Donald Trump and the international community to closely monitor the August 15 Osun State governorship election amid concerns over possible violence and voter intimidation.
Davido made the appeal in a post on X on Tuesday, urging the US and other international stakeholders to encourage Nigerian authorities to protect voters and ensure that every vote cast is respected.
The singer said the growing political tension in the state had raised concerns about possible violence, intimidation and disruption of the electoral process.
“President Donald Trump, I am calling your attention to the situation in Osun State, Nigeria, as we approach the election,” Davido wrote.
He urged authorities to ensure that residents of Osun can exercise their constitutional right to vote freely and without fear.
“Osun people deserve to exercise their constitutional right to vote freely, peacefully, and without fear,” he said.
Davido also appealed to the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage relevant authorities to protect voters.
“I appeal to the United States and the international community to pay close attention to the election and encourage all relevant authorities to ensure that every voter is protected and every vote is respected,” he added.
The singer stressed that his primary concern was to prevent bloodshed and ensure a transparent and credible electoral process.
“We do not want bloodshed. We do not want intimidation. We want peace, transparency, and a free and fair election,” he said.
Davido Had Earlier Threatened to Seek Trump’s Intervention
The latest appeal follows an earlier statement by Davido in which he said he would seek Trump’s intervention if anything went wrong during the Osun election.
Speaking during a live session with comedian Carter Efe, the singer said he would involve the US president if the electoral process was compromised.
Davido, who is a nephew of Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, has openly backed the governor’s re-election bid and has repeatedly called for a peaceful election.
He has also urged political actors and residents to reject violence, intimidation and provocation, stressing that the decision of voters must be respected.
The election is expected to feature Governor Adeleke and other major contenders, including the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, and the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Salaam.
Davido’s latest intervention comes as political activities intensify across Osun State, with stakeholders and observers calling for a peaceful, transparent and credible governorship election on August 15.
